Hello! My name is Mike. I’ve been a personal trainer for 14 years and a strength and conditioning coach for 11 years. I’ve been personal training in Liverpool Street for the last 3 years, and my training experience is spread pretty evenly across two categories:
- Training everyday gym-goers to build strength and confidence in the gym, whilst making objective progress towards their goals.
- Helping amateur athletes and lifters perform at their best through strength and conditioning training.
My main motivation for doing this job is seeing the way that sensible, structured training brings people closer to their goals and improves quality of life. Another perk is getting to know a client and seeing how progress in the gym affects the other aspects of their life.
I’ve observed that clear fitness information is hard to come by. Between social media, advertising, and a low standard of professional fitness education, fitness information can be incredibly contradictory. We’re bombarded with hearsay, speculation, scams, data trackers and sales pitches in every corner of the fitness industry. It can feel impossible to know what is true, let alone what is worth focussing on. This is a huge barrier for people to know if they are actually doing the right thing to get closer to their goals.
My Fitness Journey
My own fitness journey was very similar to this. I started kickboxing as a teenager, and joined the gym to improve my strength and power for competition.
I tried whatever I could to improve my performance: bodybuilding workouts, exercise classes, and copying workouts from magazines. I didn’t know much about training at the time, but I knew I wasn’t building strength or power in any meaningful way.
I started to get injured because I wasn’t doing the right amount and type of training. These problems were compounded by some misconceptions I carried about my injuries.
My love of training, coupled with my frustration at the lack of progress, drove me to gain my personal training qualifications, and later my degree in Strength and Conditioning Science.
It took me around 5 years from starting my training journey, to educating myself and gaining experience, to finally starting to train effectively. No one should have to experiment for that long before starting to get real results! I’m proud that I can now streamline this experience for my clients.
My Personal Training Approach
When training my clients, I focus on two questions:
- How do we make your training as enjoyable and sustainable as possible?
- What are the most important factors influencing your progress?
Once we’ve answered these two questions, we can create a training plan that works for you.
I’ve spent the majority of my career training people who have never trained before, especially in strength training. Even most athletes I work with have never lifted weights before. This means most people I train have no idea how much they can achieve in the gym and how great it will make them feel!
